Original title: Advancing into Japan and Europe with a Security Solution Serving as the “Door Lock” of the Cloud World
A cloud-based data protection startup founded by Kakao’s youngest former developer is emerging as a standard-bearer for Korean software. At the center of the story is Hwang In-seo, CEO of QueryPie, a homegrown security software company that drew attention after being selected by the leading U.S. accelerator Y Combinator and receiving investment from Salesforce in the United States and Japan’s Z Venture Capital (ZVC).
Born and raised in the countryside of Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, Hwang began programming in the second grade of elementary school and excelled in information olympiads. From the age of 19, he worked under Korea’s military service exemption program at a mobile application company and a kiosk manufacturer before joining Kakao in 2013 as its youngest developer at his fifth company. KakaoTalk Gift is one of the best-known services he helped create. He later left the company with like-minded colleagues and founded QueryPie in 2016.
With its self-developed data analysis solution, the company was selected at once by Y Combinator, which at the time was led by Sam Altman. That opportunity helped it build a U.S. business network and secure a cumulative 40 billion won in funding from overseas venture capital firms. While the company was still focused on the domestic market, Hwang heard from a Yanolja official that there was no solution capable of supporting cloud database security. He began working directly with Yanolja and completed a related solution in just six months. As word spread, Kakao, LG U+, and other companies joined its customer base.
QueryPie plays a role in the cloud world much like a door lock or a closed-circuit television camera.
South Korea’s strong security regulations and high compliance standards have instead become a source of competitiveness overseas. Hwang said the company is conducting tests through partner firms to break into major Japanese customer accounts and has also begun proof-of-concept projects in Europe, including the United Kingdom and Spain. He added that security solutions incorporating artificial intelligence features are also expected to launch in the second half of the year after stability testing.
